The Kindness Challenge Day 5 and Beyond

From the “Free Hugs Campaign” YouTube video.

In honor of Valentine’s Day and Day 5 of Random Acts of Kindness Week, today’s Kindness Challenge is to give an extra someone a hug. Yes, you are going to hug the ones you love (I hope), but why not extend a hug to someone you wouldn’t normally hug? There may be someone out there who really needs it.

“I have learned there is more power in a good strong hug than in a thousand meaningful words,” novelist Ann Hood is quoted as  saying, and I know in my own life that’s been true. I don’t remember a word people said to me after my father passed away more than 20 years ago, but I do remember the hugs I was fortunate to receive.

Is there someone you know who might be at least a little sad today because of all the focus on love and couples? A stranger or acquaintance who just looks like they need a hug? Push yourself out of your comfort zone and offer at least a small one. As inspiration, I’ve included below the “Free Hugs Campaign” YouTube video that has received nearly 75 million views in 7 years.

Random Acts of Kindness Week continues through Sunday, so this weekend your challenge is to have a conversation with one of your neighbors. Make the time to say hello, and ask how your neighbor is doing. Have a little more time? Ask a neighbor who you think might need a little extra help if there’s something specific you can do.

Need more kindness ideas for this week and beyond? See our Be Kind: Kindness Ideas page. And come back and let us know what you did and how it went! Or post your story on the Good Neighbor Stories Facebook Page.
