The Kindness Challenge Day 3

On Monday I encouraged readers to smile a little more. Tuesday’s challenge was to have lunch with someone you don’t normally eat with. Today’s challenge: let someone behind you in line jump ahead of you. The extra twist is to tell the person you’re doing it for Random Acts of Kindness Week, and ask them to “pay it forward” by doing something kind for someone else.

I did this little act of kindness on Pay it Forward Day last year at a Costco. A woman who was obviously in a hurry was in line behind me juggling several items in her arms. I asked her if she’d like to go ahead of me. A look of wonder crossed her face.

“Really?” she asked. “Thanks so much. My husband and kids are waiting outside in the car and we’re in a hurry. I really appreciate it.”

Then I told her about Pay it Forward Day, and said that I was doing something kind for her in hopes that she would pay it forward to someone else in some way. She loved the idea, and said she would figure something out to do that day for another person.

How many times did that one small act of kindness repeat itself that day? I will never know, but it was an authentic, happy exchange with a total stranger that we both enjoyed. It picked up my day, and it appeared to pick up hers, too. Try it yourself, and let us know how it goes.
