Silicon Valley Shelters Want to Send a Dog or Cat Home With You This Holiday Season

Home for the Holidays Shelters FirstThere are some adorable pooches and kitties waiting for their forever homes right now, so six Silicon Valley shelters have dropped their adoption fees for adult dogs and cats to $12 in December, as part of a “Home for the Holidays” campaign.

“Our shelters are beautiful, but they’re not homes,” said Beth Ward, VP of Shelter Operations at Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV). “Our volunteers and staff are warm and wonderful, but they’re not the same as a permanent, loving family. We hope families will consider opening their homes and hearts this holiday season.”

Animals can be adopted immediately at HHSV, or one of its two satellite adoption centers in PETCO at the El Paseo Shopping Center in San Jose, and on El Camino Real in Sunnyvale. Animals are also available at the five other shelter organizations that have joined HHSV in a coalition called Shelters First, including Santa Clara County Animal Shelter, City of Palo Alto Animal Services, Silicon Valley Animal Control Authority, City of San Jose Animal Care and Services and Town Cats.

Links to all the organizations and their adoption locations are available on the Shelters First website.

Shelters First leaders estimate that only about 25 percent of Silicon Valley pet owners adopt from shelters, and that if only 5 percent more adopted from shelters, overcrowding would be eliminated.
